Bike Touring on a Single Speed

Have you ever thought about bike touring on a single speed?

In the spring of this year my partner Michael suggested we bike tour from Toronto to Montreal in the summer/fall. The only bike he had at the time was a single speed but he didn’t let that deter him. He quickly set to work researching others who had cycle toured on single speeds, which bags would work for his bike, and which route would be more flat and suitable for his one gear.

We had an incredible trip and he absolutely loved bike touring on a single speed. So I asked him if he’d sit down and share his experiences here. If you’re curious about what it’s like cycle touring with one gear and want to see how others have found it, check out my chat with Michael:

As Michael touches on in the video, he was met with some of the concerns he had read about in regards to cycle touring on a single speed. There were 2-3 steeper hills that he needed to walk his bike up and on the second day he did experience some knee pain he had to adjust for.

But overall, he really enjoyed bike touring on a single speed and plans to do much more of it. At the end of the day, this was the bike that let him get out on a bicycle adventure and he had an incredible time with it.
