When you’re cycling around Scotland, there are sheep EVERYWHERE. And you might think after 5 weeks on the road I would be tired of seeing them. But nope! I still get giddy and stare at all the fluffy babies every time I go by.
On one such occasion, towards the end of my tour, I thought I saw a sheep that looked as though it was caught in a tree. I know I can be a worry wart so I wondered if perhaps I was just seeing things. I was on my way to meet a fellow cyclist for the first time and I didn’t want to be late. But the feeling nagged at me and I knew I had to turn around and check.
Sure enough, the poor thing had gotten her horn completely wrapped around a thick branch. She was pulling and tugging at it but unable to get anywhere. There were four fences between us, including a couple with barbed wire, but I knew I had to get to her.
After some careful acrobatics, I managed (without ripping my pants!) to get to her. She was understandably spooked by her situation, and I’m sure my presence didn’t help. I think she had been there for a while because she had rubbed off all the bark where she was caught.
The branch was thick and strong and caught between her horn and her back. At first I was worried I might not be able to get her free at all! But after a good amount of time bending and twisting the branch, I managed to get it at just the right angle, she lifted her head and BOOM — she was free!
She quickly ran off to eat all the things and I made my way back, over the collection of fences, to my bike, and on to meet my friend.
Whether it be human or animal, I think it’s important we all do what we can to make the world a little kinder, safer and happier. I could have rushed on with my day, focused on getting where I needed to go. But I’m glad I took the time to be in the present, stop, and prioritize what really mattered… a creature in need.
Wherever you are in the world today, I hope you find an opportunity to bring a little joy and kindness to someone’s day, and that another does the same for you. Let’s all take care of each other out there!
